From Community Care to Patient Transport: Elemo’s Journey with St John Ambulance Victoria
For nearly a decade, Elemo has been a trusted presence on the road with St John Ambulance Victoria, delivering compassionate, professional care to patients across the state. As a Patient Transport Officer (PTO) in the Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) team, his story reflects not only personal dedication, but the strength, reliability and purpose that define St John’s service.
A Lifelong Commitment to Helping Others
Originally from Ethiopia, Elemo’s career has always been centred on people.
“I used to do social work back home, supporting women and children in the community,” he explains. “Resources were very limited, but helping others has always been important to me.”
After also working in a hospital as a patient healthcare assistant, Elemo brought his passion for care with him when he moved to Australia to join his wife and start a new chapter with their young family.
Like many who enter the healthcare system for the first time, Elemo’s pathway began with curiosity, and a recommendation.
“A friend introduced me to how healthcare works here,” he says. “I started transporting patients within hospitals, then completed my NEPT course.”
Choosing St John: A Trusted Name in Care
It was another friend, already working with St John Ambulance Victoria, who encouraged Elemo to take the next step.
“He had such a positive experience with St John,” Elemo recalls. “That’s the kind of organisation I wanted to be part of.”
After completing his NEPT training in 2016, Elemo successfully joined St John, and has since built a long and rewarding career.
His time here showcases St John’s reputation as a trusted NEPT provider, not only for patients and healthcare partners, but also for its people.
Delivering Care with Purpose
Every day begins early for Elemo. Before each shift, he prepares his vehicle thoroughly, completing safety checks, restocking supplies and reviewing the day ahead.
But the role of a Patient Transport Officer goes far beyond logistics.
“It’s not just driving someone from point A to point B,” he explains. “It’s about making sure patients feel safe, comfortable and respected.”
Working closely with nurses and healthcare professionals, Elemo transports patients between hospitals, clinics and care facilities across Victoria, often travelling to regional communities and seeing new parts of the state.
However, it’s the human connection that matters most.
“Talking to my patients, having a chat and making sure they’re okay, that gives me a real sense of purpose,” he says. “It makes me proud of the work I do.”
Supporting the Community When It Matters Most
Non-emergency patient transport is a critical part of the healthcare system, ensuring patients can safely access care, attend appointments and return home with the support they need.
“This service is very important,” Elemo says. “Patients rely on us, especially when they need medical support during transport.”
At St John Ambulance Victoria, this responsibility is met with professionalism, compassion and rigorous training, ensuring every patient is cared for with dignity.
It’s this balance of clinical capability and human connection that sets St John apart as a trusted provider in NEPT services.
A Rewarding Career with Lasting Impact
For Elemo, the role continues to bring a deep sense of fulfilment.
“When we take patients to their appointments safely and with respect, you can see the relief on their faces,” he says. “That gratitude means a lot.”
It’s also a role that demands teamwork, communication and resilience; qualities that are nurtured and supported within the St John environment.
“This is a job for people who really care about others,” Elemo adds. “If you’re people-centred and want to help the community, it’s very rewarding.”
Life Beyond the Uniform
Outside of work, Elemo keeps active and grounded. Whether it’s going to the gym or spending time with his three boys, aged 9, 10 and 12, family and wellbeing remain central to his life.
“Exercise helps me reset mentally and physically,” he says. “And I love taking my kids to sport and spending time together.”
Building Careers That Make a Difference
Elemo’s journey highlights not only the opportunities within St John Ambulance Victoria, but also the organisation’s commitment to building long-term, meaningful careers.
With many team members dedicating years, even decades, to the service, St John continues to invest in training, development and a culture of care that supports both staff and patients.
For those considering a role in NEPT, Elemo’s message is simple:
“It’s a great place to work. You’re helping people every day, and that makes it all worthwhile.”
