Honouring Bravery: St John Ambulance 2024 First Aid Champion Awards Are Revealed

On Tuesday, August 20th, St John Ambulance Victoria hosted the 2024 First Aid Champion Awards at the State Library in Melbourne. This annual event recognises remarkable individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary bravery, and commitment in providing first aid. This year, the competition was exceptionally fierce, with many high-quality entries. As a result, we have recognised 14 exceptional champions.

These individuals stand out, as fewer than 1 in 10 Australians (9%) feel very confident in providing first aid during an emergency. In Victoria, nearly 3 in 5 people (53%) lack confidence in such situations. These statistics are concerning, particularly given the frequency of emergencies - 80% of Australians have witnessed a health or medical crisis, with 45% experiencing one in the past year alone.

This is why Gordon Botwright, CEO of St John Ambulance, strongly believes that everybody should know first aid “You never know when you’re going to need your first aid skills,” said Mr Botwright, “It only takes one person to help save a life, and it’s important that more people are trained and confident to do so.”

From a colleague who was able to identify a sudden cardiac arrest, perform CPR, and use a defibrillator until help arrived, to an 11-year-old son and his 9-year-old sister, who were alone at home with their dad when he suffered a frightening seizure while chopping wood in the back yard. They were able to use DRSABC and call 000, to save their dad’s life. Every story is an inspiration, and a reminder of the difference one person can make.
