Isaac’s Remarkable Journey - from Youth Volunteer to Community Leader
We are never short of remarkable young individuals making a difference in their communities at St John. Today, we celebrate Isaac Johns, a dedicated volunteer whose journey with St John Ambulance demonstrates the spirit of this year's International Youth Day theme: “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.”
Isaac's connection to St John Ambulance runs deep, rooted in family tradition and personal passion. “I’ve been involved with St John pretty much my entire life. My grandfather joined as a cadet, and my family has grown through the organisation; my parents even met through St John. So, I’ve always been exposed to it, and it has always felt like home.” Says Isaac.
His journey began at a young age, inspired by the vibrant community of St John. “Growing up, I was often brought to divisional meeting nights, which were always fun and exciting. I looked up to the role models around me, and seeing my family work together for something greater inspired me to join as soon as I could,” he explains.
Starting as a Youth Member in 2017, Isaac quickly progressed through the ranks; from Squad Leader to Senior Leader, then Youth Leader, and eventually to a w Grade V Youth Officer. “I practiced my first aid skills, made many friends, and sharpened my leadership abilities. The role has allowed me to grow exponentially, something I don’t think I could have achieved elsewhere,” he reflects.
Through his volunteer work, Isaac has developed invaluable skills in leadership and teamwork. “The most prominent skill I’ve developed is leadership and working with people from all walks of life. It’s been a significant growth area for me,” he says.
Volunteering with St John has also influenced Isaac’s professional aspirations. “It has provided me with a fantastic outlet to give back to the community. This experience has allowed me to focus on my true career aspirations in the film industry,” he adds.
As a Youth Officer, Isaac has had a deep impact on his community. “I like to think I’ve helped other young people grow, not just within the organisation but as individuals. Providing mentorship and support within my division has been particularly fulfilling,” he says.
Despite facing challenges, Isaac remains persistent. “The key to overcoming challenges is to stay true to yourself and persevere. Knowing you’ve done your best and not giving up is a powerful mindset, one that I carry into my everyday life,” he advises.
This year’s theme emphasises the role of digital pathways in youth development. Isaac’s role aligns well with this theme. “As a Youth Officer, I’ve had to develop my digital skills, using tools and platforms to manage and enhance our division’s operations,” he explains.
Isaac’s advice to young people considering volunteering is straightforward: “Give it a go. Volunteering is about family, friends, and community. You might be surprised by how much you get out of it, even if you don’t commit forever.”
His ongoing inspiration comes from a familial legacy of service. “My grandfather has been a member since he was 11, and I hope to be as present as he has been over the years, making a difference in people’s lives,” Isaac concludes.
As we celebrate International Youth Day, Isaac’s story is a testimony to the power of youth engagement and the impact of dedicated volunteers. His journey with St John Ambulance not only highlights his personal growth but also demonstrates the positive change young people can bring to their communities.
