St John Kicks Off 100 Years of Empowering Youth with Lifelong Skills

2025 marks a significant milestone for St John Ambulance as the Youth Program celebrates its 100th anniversary in Australia. To commemorate this achievement, we spoke with Tamara Brown, the Training Operations Manager at St John Victoria, who has a deep connection to the program.
Tamara first joined St John in 2012, working in Event Health Services, where she was introduced to the Youth Program. Her initial exposure to it opened her eyes to the incredible opportunities it offers young people.
“The Youth Program surprised me in many ways,” she shared. “It’s not just about learning first aid skills. It’s about building personal development, self-confidence, and leadership. These are vital skills that many young people don’t always get in school or through other activities.”

Tamara explained that one of the program’s most valuable contributions is teaching young members first aid. “The first aid skills they learn can be taken back to their families and communities, strengthening overall resilience,” she said. “But beyond first aid, the program offers personal growth and teaches young people how to work in a team and lead others.”
The second most valuable contribution is the social aspect of the program and the sense of belonging. “It has made a terrific difference, especially in reversing some of the more negative social impacts (anxiety, withdrawal, etc.) caused by the pandemic lockdowns in Victoria. Attending duties with other cadets has boosted my daughter’s confidence in herself and her abilities.” Adds Rebecca Underwood, Psychologist and St John Ambulance Victoria Volunteer.

Recent research conducted by St John Ambulance National Office shows that 70% of parents who responded the survey said that the program increased their child’s confidence. “St John provided him a positive sense of identity and belonging; that he is part of something bigger than himself. It has been very positive for his self-esteem, and we are deeply grateful.” Anonymous parent. 99% of past youth members also interviewed, said that the program had a significant impact on their life.

Another key moment in the program’s history was the 2012 Cadet Review. This review confirmed the Youth Program’s relevance and importance in today’s society, ensuring its continued success for future generations. “I remember feeling proud to be in the organisation and wearing its uniform. I was proud of the ability to help others.” Says anonymous youth member.
The program’s impact goes beyond training, it helps young people form strong connections with their communities. Tamara noted that many youth members get involved in volunteering, providing first aid services at events, and attending local meetings. Working alongside adult members, they learn the value of serving others and gain a sense of pride in being part of something bigger than themselves. “One day I treated my first cardiac arrest, and my training kicked in automatically; from that moment, I never thought how boring the training was again.” Anonymous youth member.

“Easter Camp is another highlight for these young members,” she said. “It’s an adventure camp that pushes them to challenge themselves, build their leadership skills, and grow as individuals.”

As St John celebrates 100 years of the Youth Program, Tamara emphasised the importance of these young members understanding the legacy they are a part of. “They develop an appreciation for St John’s history and feel connected to the wider mission,” she said. “This celebration reinforces their role in shaping the future of the program.”
For a century, the St John Ambulance Youth Program has been transforming the lives of young Australians, equipping them with essential life skills, leadership opportunities, and a deep sense of community. As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we look ahead to the next 100 years, continuing to inspire and empower young people to grow into confident, compassionate leaders committed to serving others.
