St John Snake Bite First Aid Program is Introduced to Victorian Students
St John Ambulance Victoria, in partnership with CSL Seqirus, has introduced a snake bite first aid module to help primary school students learn how to stay safe and respond in an emergency.
Launched at Wandong Primary School, the program is part of St John’s free First Aid in Schools initiative, which has reached more than 1.5 million students across Victoria.
Designed for Grades 3 to 6, the 45-minute session teaches children how to recognise snake habitats, reduce the risk of being bitten, and apply essential first aid techniques such as pressure immobilisation bandaging. Students also learn what to do if a person becomes unwell or unconscious.
St John Ambulance Victoria Marketing & Community Manager Emma Klinakis said the program gives young people practical skills they can use in real-life situations.
“Snake bites are a real concern in many communities, particularly in regional areas,” she said.
“By teaching children simple first aid steps, we’re helping them feel more confident and prepared if something happens.”
With support from CSL Seqirus, the program will reach an additional 5,000 students, particularly in regional communities where the risk of snake encounters is higher and access to training can be limited.
"CSL Seqirus has a proud 100-year history of manufacturing antivenoms in Australia to treat bites and stings from these venomous creatures. Education programs like this help to reduce animal encounters, which ultimately means fewer people ever need these lifesaving medicines.” said Dr Jules Bayliss, CSL Seqirus Medical Director.
As part of the partnership, St John Ambulance Victoria will also help kids and their families access the free Australian Bites & Stings app, a trusted source beyond the classroom, which includes interactive learning and first-aid information on what to do in the event of a bite or sting.
A broader focus on community education
The snake bite module builds on St John Ambulance Victoria’s strong focus on community education.
Through its First Aid in Schools program, public training courses and event health services, St John equips Victorians of all ages with the skills and confidence to respond in an emergency.
By starting with young learners, St John is helping to create safer, more prepared communities, one student at a time.
